Marcelo Kohen, of Argentine nationality and resident in Switzerland, is a Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva (Switzerland), a member of the Institut de Droit International (an institution founded in 1873 and awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1904) and its Secretary General since 2015 (re-elected in 2021). He is founder of the Latin American Society of International Law and its first Director-General. He has acted as a advocate and counsel before the International Court of Justice and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea for various States of Latin America, Asia and Europe. He is an arbitrator in more than a dozen international investment tribunals. Member of the Argentine-Chilean Permanent Conciliation Commission (2022), Rapporteur of the Council of Europe, the International Law Association and the Institut de Droit International on matters of succession or jurisdictional immunity of States. Author of more than 100 publications in French, English and Spanish in the area of International Law, including his book Possession contestée et souveraineté territoriale (Adverse Possession and Territorial Sovereignty) (Presses universitaires de France, 1997) awarded the Paul Guggenheim Prize in 1997 Visiting professor at various European universities and member of the editorial boards or advisers of several international law journals.

Graduated from the Faculty of Law of the National University of Rosario (Argentina) in March 1983, obtained a Diploma from the Academy of International Law in The Hague in 1990 and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Geneva (1995).
